Many rituals, as many outfits, many more guests and a whole lot of gold jewellery. There is much for a Telugu bride to do before her big day or, in the case of Telugu weddings, her big days. A modern Telugu wedding ceremony can go from two to five days, packed with several rituals at different venues, outfit changes and coordination with key people, like the pandit and the emcee. With so much at stake, a Telugu wedding is also a marvel in organisation.

The Telugu bride herself, has the additional job of getting ready, showing up on time and looking her best, amid all the wedding chaos. Pre-wedding treatments, time taken to get ready, donning her gold jewellery and the commute should factor into her personal schedule. How to get it all done? We have some tips.

Mehendi:

While it is not a traditional practice, mehendi ceremonies are recent additions to Telugu weddings. But if you don’t have an entire ceremony set aside for it, make sure you schedule enough time for applying the mehendi, before any of the wedding chaos begins. It can take between two and four hours, depending on the intricacies and size of the design

Beauty treatments:

A number of the Telugu wedding rituals – such as the muhurtham, mangala snanam, and Gauri puja – involve preparing the bride (and the groom) to look her best for her wedding. Traditional ingredients like turmeric, turmeric water, and oil are used. But a modern Telugu bride also has to factor in a day at the spa, for nourishing pre-wedding hair and skin care routines that will result in lustrous hair and glowing skin on her wedding day.

Hair and make-up:

The hair and make-up team have a crucial job at the wedding – to make the bride look like the best version of herself. They must be given ample time to do carry this out. The foundation, blush, (transfer-proof) lip colour, liner, shadow and sealer must come together with the hairdo and give her the perfect bridal look. One that retains her best natural features.

Dress fittings:

The saree, the outfit of choice for the quintessential Telugu bride, is universal and doesn’t require fittings. But saree blouses, underskirts and even jewellery should be undergo at least two rounds of fittings. This should be done well in advance of any of the ceremonies getting started, which will give the Telugu bride enough time for necessary alterations, to ensure a well-crafted fit and comfort during long rituals.

Getting ready:

Getting ready – draping her saree and donning her golden jewels – for her wedding is a cherished occasion for a Telugu bride, one that should start early and be given enough time. It’s a moment unto herself, before the Telugu bride steps out into the world, and takes her seat beside her future husband, in the presence of the dearest ones.

Delegate, delegate, delegate:

A Telugu bride would do well to rope in her cousins and friends to do her bidding. They can check on the guests, check on the caterers, co-ordinate with the DJ, and even bring her a cool lemon soda when she likes. They are there to serve her and they will do it happily.

Finally… remember to eat:

Weddings are a place for fun and celebrations. But for the bride, it is also a demanding time. Take a bite of the pulihora, nibble on the bobbatlu, and sip the payasam. Just don’t let your stomach rumble in hunger. Also, stay hydrated.
