There is so much to do before a Telugu wedding. The multi-day affair, which can go on for two to five days on average, with numerous rituals in between, involves a lot of planning, organisation and co-ordination. Once the date is set during the Muhurtham, the Telugu bride and her family get the wheels rolling. Planning a Telugu wedding can start up to a year in advance. From buying the sarees and picking the jewellery to scheduling the rituals, booking the mandap, priest, caterers and wedding hall, inviting guests, getting days off work, finding a wedding photographer and striking ethereal poses at the pre-wedding photoshoots, there is much to be done. Here is an essential to-do list every Telugu bride and her family must tick off, in the months leading up to the wedding ceremony.
First order of business, the finest silks of the land, from Venkatagiri and Gadwal to Kancheevaram, Dharamavaram, Mangalagiri and Pochampally, have to be sourced. Border size, colours and combinations will be carefully examined and sarees will be picked for the different rituals. This can take place over several weeks, as the Telugu bride scans catalogues of different saree vendors.
Jewellery shopping happens months in advance of the wedding. Each ritual calls for a different approach, giving the Telugu bride the opportunity to explore her many aesthetics. Find complete ensembles at Rivaah by Tanishq, each one meticulously crafted for the modern Telugu bride. For the Nischayathartham, or engagement ceremony, choose from elegant diamond-studded ensembles, with a touch of coloured gemstones, to an enchanting pink and green set.
The Gauri Puja, followed by the wedding rituals, calls for grandiose. The intricately carved gold ornaments, from the maangtika on the head to rings on the toes, to the haaram necklaces, vaddanam (waist band) and bangles in between, are often embedded with Laxmi motifs, glass kundan, diamonds and gemstones of different colours.
For the reception, a Telugu bride often goes antique chic. She chooses statement pieces studded with diamonds and colourful gemstones, whose shine is dimmed by her radiant smile.
The diamonds may shimmer and the gold may glitter, but neither will shine brighter than the glow of her skin, the glint in her eyes and the glamour in the smile of a modern Telugu bride. From skin to hair to overall wellness, starting a daily routine months in advance will yield the best results. Setting aside time every day to indulge in a skincare routine and every other day to sneak in a quick workout will keep the Telugu bride looking refreshed and ready for the new journey she is about to embark on.
There are plenty of adventurous wedding photographers. But a Telugu bride would do well to book one well in advance, with an itinerary of the rituals and additional shoots. Block the dates, before another bride snatches up the photographer you want capturing you on your special day.
A Telugu wedding ceremony is packed with numerous rituals and multiple venue changes. Add to this the time it takes to ready the paraphernalia and prepare for each event, while finding the time to eat and rest. A Telugu wedding, therefore, is a highly co-ordinated event that has potential to go off without a glitch when planned down to the last detail.
